A Shoebox Full of Snow is a radio play by Julie Mayhew. It was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 16 September 2011. Inspired by the hoarding behavior of the author's elderly neighbors, the play features an interactive component. Prior to the production, the producers established a website at which users can share their own stories about objects they find meaningful[1]. The play was nominated for the 2011 BBC Audio Drama Awards in the Best Audio Drama category.

Plot[]

Council worker Christopher tries to persuade hoarders Renie and Albert Grace to vacate their flat in a tower block scheduled to be demolished. As he gets to know the couple, he wonders why they have kept all their possessions and reflects on his own relationship with his pregnant girlfriend.

Cast[]

  • Janine - Julie Mayhew
  • Albert - Richard Briers
  • Renie - Edna Dore
  • Christopher - Joe Armstrong
  • Produced by Justine Potter, Red Production Company

Critical Reception[]

"The casting of Richard Briers and Edna Doré as the elderly couple lifts this from a decent drama to a sublime experience. The pair convey as intense and passionate a love story as anything one would get from a pairing a quarter of their age. Beautiful, poignant and a privilege to listen to." - Jane Anderson, Radio Times[2]
