Driftwood is a 30-part Daytime Drama broadcast on RTE in 2004.

It was RTÉ first radio soap in 6 years. The series aired weekdays at 10.50 a.m. in an eight-minute slot.

Plot[]

Driftwood is set in the fictional seaside town of Heron's Bay, somewhere on the west coast. The main action takes place in the café run by a mouthy Dublin woman and her hippy-dippy daughter, and in the guesthouse where a former Rose of Tralee holds the fort while her cheating husband commutes for his marketing job. There's a dodgy developer, a deluded mistress, a loser musician and his demented girlfriend who plays the harp at Bunratty banquets.

Credits[]

The series was devised, written and produced by Catherine Maher with Dermot Carmody as a contributing writer,

The cast included Simon Delaney, Amelia Crowley, Helen Norton, Ruth McCabe and Michelle Buckley.

Noel Storey was the pilot's sound engineer, followed by sound engineer Gerry Gogan for the series

Production[]

RTÉ commissioning editor Ann Marie O'Callaghan valued Driftwood budget at around €100,000 - "a large chunk of our drama department's budget". Driftwood was the first time that a major drama series was being produced for RTÉ by an independent production company. RTÉ worked before with independent producers, but typically involved the producer using at least some of their facilities. Driftwood was recorded in Beacon Studios in Dublin , with five episodes recorded at a time.
