Mathry Beacon is the first of the plays that made Giles Cooper's reputation.

The play opens during the Second World War, a group of service men and women are sent to operate
and guard a secret installation at Mathry Beacon in a remote and isolated part of Wales. During
this enforced isolation they begin to form a community so potentially perfect that their leaders
keep them in ignorance that the war is over. Cooper shows the forces that keep society together
and those that break it apart.................
